I think it is extremely important that all of the hype and hysteria around social media be put into perspective. Much of what is ballyhooed around social media as been practiced for many years by the best communications and marketing pros. Whether the new SM elite want to believe it or not, there is still a lot to be learned from the best of the old pros who did things right then and still do it right now. Maybe this is not a topic idea, but just wanted to get it off my chest. Everything old is not bad and everything new is not good.

These days, prospects and clients are likely to "meet" you online before they ever shake your hand in person.
Even once they do meet you, if they are interested in doing business with you, chances are they'll really start digging online. When people look for you on Google, (or LinkedIn or Facebook,) what do they see?
Chances are, what they find isn't something you strategically planned. But you can easily fix that with intelligent use of free social media. And it doesn't have to take up a ton of valuable time, either.
